The 5 W’s of XaaS (Everything as a Service)

xaas blog graphic

WHAT IS XaaS?

XaaS is the general, all-encompassing term for “anything” or “everything as a service.” Simply put, XaaS is when a provider offers cloud computing services over the internet, as opposed to businesses purchasing, installing, and hosting these tools and products on-site. This cuts costs by allowing a business to purchase use of these products on a subscription basis from providers like us here at Sierra Experts.

WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF XaaS?

There are quite a few different versions of XaaS, but the three main ones are:

  • Software as a Service (SaaS): This allows a business to use and run software applications that the provider is hosting through cloud infrastructure. Some popular examples include: Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Creative Cloud, and HubSpot.
  • Platform as a Service (PaaS): Simply stated, this means that a managed virtual server is provided for a business to utilize. The provider will ensure that the virtual server is functioning and performing properly, and the customer manages all data and applications within the virtual server.
  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): In this case, the provider gives access to all of the hardware needed, including servers, racks, wiring, network gear, heating and cooling, and more. The provider manages the hardware, and the performance and operating system are managed by the customer.
  • Many providers, including us at Sierra, will offer hybrid options of the examples of XaaS above to best suit the needs of the business.

WHEN DID IT COME ABOUT? / WHERE DID IT COME FROM?

XaaS came about as cloud computing took off. More specifically, when the internet became a near flawless resource and high speed networks could be found almost everywhere – that’s when various doors opened for the cloud. It can be said that the modern cloud computing model dates back to around 1999 when the first Software as a Service (SaaS) application was offered, Salesforce.com. Since then, the model has exploded and XaaS will likely continue to be a giant in technology moving forward.

WHO CAN BENEFIT? / WHY SHOULD MY BUSINESS CONSIDER UTILIZING XaaS?

Years ago, if someone told you that entertainment industry would become completely digital, you’d probably be pretty skeptical, right? Well, not that long ago DVDs, CDs, and other hardware were commonplace, but now? Now if you have an arsenal of DVDs, you’re definitely the social minority. Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services have taken over.

Much like that, Xaas and cloud computing services have become the next big thing. With XaaS, you’re able to minimize necessary hardware all while cutting costs. Not to mention, using the cloud means your options are much more flexible and you can depend on the experts to manage and monitor your environment if you wish.
