Government-grade Microsoft 365 on the cloud your team already knows.

Microsoft 365 GCC (Government Community Cloud) runs on the same commercial Microsoft cloud infrastructure as Microsoft 365 Commercial, with government data handling and screened U.S. personnel. It is built for government entities and the contractors and partners that serve them.

Sierra Experts is a veteran-owned Microsoft CSP Direct Bill Partner headquartered in Pittsburgh. We help you work out whether GCC fits, get ready for Microsoft’s eligibility validation, and plan a move that doesn’t disrupt your team.

Who it’s for

GCC is for organizations that work for or with government. Microsoft validates eligibility before it provisions a GCC tenant.

Federal agencies

U.S. federal government agencies and departments.

State, local & tribal government

State, county, municipal, and tribal government entities.

Contractors holding a government contract

Contractors and partners that already hold a government contract.

Contractors pursuing a government contract

Contractors and partners working to win one. Be ready to show Microsoft supporting documentation.

GCC usually fits when…

  • You handle Federal Contract Information (FCI)
  • You’re working toward CMMC Level 1
  • A government customer or contract asks you to use a government cloud
  • Your contracts involve FCI, with no CUI clauses you know of

Look at GCC High when…

  • You handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)
  • Your contracts include DFARS 252.204-7012
  • You handle ITAR or EAR export-controlled data
  • You’re working toward CMMC Level 2, or a prime flows down CUI or DFARS 7012

Not sure which data types or clauses apply? That’s common. We’ll walk through your contracts and data with you and your compliance advisor before you choose a cloud.

GCC vs. GCC High: key differences

Both are Microsoft 365 clouds for government work. The data you handle usually decides which one you need.

Handling CUI, DFARS 7012, or ITAR/EAR data?

If CUI, DFARS 252.204-7012, or ITAR/EAR data is involved, GCC usually isn’t enough. GCC High is a separate, sovereign cloud and a different, longer path.

How Sierra Experts helps

We plan and run the move with you, from the first eligibility question to life after cutover.

1

Confirm the fit

We walk through our GCC checklist with you: eligibility, data types, contract clauses, outside collaboration, seats, and timeline. Then we tell you plainly whether Commercial, GCC, or GCC High fits.

2

Prepare for validation

We help you assemble the contract or agency documentation Microsoft asks for, and start planning while validation is in progress.

3

Plan licensing and the tenant

We map your current licenses to GCC plans and quote your licensing, then plan identity, devices, a security baseline, and the cutover date.

4

Migrate and cut over

Mailboxes, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams move tenant to tenant. Your domain switches at cutover, devices re-enroll, and we provide hands-on support right after.

5

Secure and monitor

Conditional Access, MFA, and compliance settings to support your requirements, with security monitoring if it’s in scope.

6

Manage it day to day

Training, compliance documentation, and ongoing Microsoft 365 management, so the environment stays healthy after the project ends.

Matching security monitoring: Microsoft Sentinel in Azure Government (FedRAMP High) is the security monitoring built for government clouds. Ask us how it fits your Microsoft 365 GCC environment.

Is Microsoft 365 GCC right for you?

Our two-page qualifying checklist walks you through eligibility, data, contract clauses, outside collaboration, seats, and timeline, then shows where you land: Commercial, GCC, or GCC High. It takes about 10 minutes with your Sierra Experts rep.

Frequently asked questions

What is Microsoft 365 GCC?

Microsoft 365 GCC (Government Community Cloud) runs on the same commercial Microsoft cloud infrastructure as Microsoft 365 Commercial, with government data handling and screened U.S. personnel. It is built for government entities and the contractors and partners that serve them. Your users keep the Microsoft 365 apps they already know.

Who is eligible for Microsoft 365 GCC?

U.S. federal agencies, state, local, and tribal governments, and contractors or partners that hold or are pursuing a government contract. Microsoft validates eligibility before it provisions a GCC tenant, so have your contract or agency documentation ready. We help you prepare it.

Is GCC enough if we handle CUI or have DFARS 252.204-7012 in our contracts?

Usually not. If CUI, DFARS 252.204-7012, or ITAR/EAR export-controlled data is in play, GCC usually isn’t enough, and GCC High is typically the right fit. See our Microsoft 365 GCC High readiness page, and confirm your requirements with your compliance or legal advisors.

How long does a move to GCC take?

For many small organizations, a few weeks overall. Most of that time is waiting on Microsoft to validate eligibility, and we start planning while you wait. Your actual timing depends on validation, data volume, device count, and your schedule, so treat it as a range, not a promise.

Will our users notice a difference after the move?

Day to day, people keep familiar Microsoft 365 apps. GCC is a new tenant, though, so users sign in to the new tenant at cutover and devices re-enroll. Some features arrive in GCC later than in Commercial, and some third-party or Marketplace apps may not be available in GCC yet. We check the apps you depend on before you commit.

Can we still collaborate with outside companies in GCC?

Generally, yes. Teams meetings, guest access, and B2B sharing in GCC are closer to Commercial than to GCC High. Share your specific sharing scenarios with us and we’ll confirm how each one works.
